The aim of this project is to develop a new temperature monitoring system in which the cutting insert incorporates a thin-film temperature sensor and the insert holder contains the signal conditioning and wireless data transmission circuits. The (thin-film) temperature sensor should be deposited on the leading edge of the insert and positioned as close as possible to the cutting edge. The sensor should be suitable for measuring the temperature at the cutting edge in a temperature range between 600 ºC and 900 ºC.

It is also intended that the sensor be stable for the lifetime of the cutting tool. The temperature sensor will be electrically connected to the insert holder for signal processing.
