The Belenus project aims to improve corrosion-fighting materials and develop and implement new assembly strategies in biomass power plants, which will reduce the cost of electricity production. The project began in March 2019 and is being developed by a European consortium made up of fifteen partners from seven European countries: Spain, Portugal, Germany, Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom and France.

Among the various goals set for this project, the main one is to increase the durability of boiler tube joints by 20 per cent, thus increasing the efficiency and useful life of biomass plants by 40-42 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, and to reduce fuel costs by 10-15 per cent. Another objective is to reduce bioenergy CAPEX and OPEX by 1.03% and 40% respectively. This consortium is made up of a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in strategic areas of the bioenergy sector, which will innovate in developments capable of taking the technology to market. The project is led by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is receiving funding from the European Commission (EC) under the Horizon 2020 framework programme.
